Thanks to plus-size model and photographer Silvana Denker, women and men are taking to the streets of Germany in their skivvies. Silvana, who got sick of re-touching photos for magazines, started the #BodyLove campaign to remind the world that we aren’t defined by size. She told People Magazine, “I want to show the diversity of the human body. We are all different and there’s not the ONE perfect body like the media often shows us.”
Silvana wanted to reach as many people as possible with this idea, which is why she thought up taking photos of pedestrians in the street. She also, of course, decided against re-touching any of the photos. “I show men and women the way they are – with bellies, bumps, stretchmarks after giving birth – and they love themselves and everybody else should too,” she said. “…Nobody’s perfect–the imperfections make us special.” That’s damn right!

So how did she get people to take part? Social media of course! Silvana posted a casting call on Facebook, asking for regular people. “The women and men I worked with were very excited, especially right before the shoot,” she says. “Some of them had to bring themselves to take off their clothes and show their bodies in public. And not to forget that it’s December and it’s not that warm in Germany!” Brrrr! I think I’d have a hard time doing that.
What do you think about the #BodyLove campaign? It’s interesting, we see so many different body types around us in our day to day life, but when it comes to the media there aren’t as many body types represented. I think if we got used to seeing images of all different body types, there would be a lot less body shaming happening. Props to Silvana Denker for creating this campaign. She even got a lingerie company to donate, and she’s trying to raise the funds to take it worldwide! Can I get a YES?!
