Over the past 10 years, the level of interest in organic facial products has soared. However, as the public becomes more aware of all the benefits associated with natural organic skin care, sales continue to climb. While the primary benefit is to a person’s skin, there are actually other reasons that using organic products is a much better choice over those formulated with synthetic or inorganic substances.

The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) establishes the regulations and standards in the United States regarding the manufacture of drugs & food.³ The problem is that they do not pay as much attention to skin care and make-up as they should, thereby allowing some very harmful chemicals to be used in creating almost every product that is mass marketed.

Some of the harmful ingredients that are used frequently in manufacturing the most common non-organic skin care and make-up items include:

  • Mercury

  • Dioxane

  • Nitrosamines

  • DEA

  • Cyclomethicone

  • Ammonium Laureth Sulfate

  • Alcohol, Isopropyl (SD-40)

  • Polyethylene Glycol

  • Polyethylene eth-

Most of these compounds are absorbed easily by the skin, yet the body has no way of ridding itself of them. The toxins remain in your intestine and eventually get spread through the body and can damage organs throughout your body.

Read Product Labels & Learn About What You're Getting

If you want to protect your body from the harmful ingredients that are used in most commercial brands, you should check out organic skin care products and organic make-up. Of course, you will need to get in the habit of reading product labels, just as you probably do already when it comes to the foods that we buy.

We are all concerned about our health and well being, which means that it is important that we are proactive in choosing products that are good for us. Choosing organic skin care products and organic make-up does not have to be a tedious process.

Once you have become reasonably familiar with the "bad" ingredients that are so commonly used in skin care products, you will learn to recognize the difference between synthetic & natural products. Becoming a more informed consumer will allow you to make smart choices while shopping for your organic skin care products.

It may get a little frustrating when you're initially trying to decipher labels because there are so many ingredients listed. One thing you can use that will help you to decipher product labels is to break each label into thirds. Focus on these ingredients first, because they usually make up the majority of the product.

The rule is that the ingredients should be listed in descending order according to the amount that they make up the formula. For example, if you have a product that is 88% aloe and 90% water, the water would be listed first, the numbers show there's more water than aloe. Alphabetic listing does not override this.

Good for the Environment

Organic facial products are much more environmentally friendly than their non-organic counterparts. Products made with toxins and chemicals actually cause extreme destruction to the planet. What happens is that products made with dangerous ingredients get washed off in the sink, which allows chemicals to enter the water supply system. Even though water goes through a sophisticated filtration process, some level of toxins is missed.

Unfortunately, any contamination in water ends up being used for agricultural purposes, to water cattle and livestock, and even for everyday uses around the home. This means that both adults and animals are being exposed to ingredients proven harmful. While toxic waste from just one person would not be overly impacting, it is important to remember that there are millions upon millions of people using products made with synthetic and inorganic ingredients.

This shows just how important organic skin care products, as well as other organic products are to the environment. However, there is another factor to consider. Products not made with organic ingredients are manufactured with processes also deemed harmful. In other words, emissions coming from manufacturing plants along with chemicals that end up in the water supply and soil put the planet at great risk.

Healthier Skin

In addition to all natural skin care products being better for the environment, they have the ability to restore skin to good health. The problem with skincare products made using synthetic or inorganic ingredients is that they can lead to irritation, inflammation, skin disorders, discoloration, and more. Even worse, these products often contain carcinogenic substances, which are ingredients known to cause cancer.

In comparison, the best organic facial products are made with only the finest quality substances that meet extremely high and regulated standards. With this, skin is healed on both the inside and outside. Internally, collagen production increases, damage caused to cells by free radicals decreases, and even oxygen and blood flow improve. Externally, a person’s skin will be better protected against environmental elements.

Perhaps the most wonderful aspect about going ‘green’ with your skin care is the ‘inside-out’ approach to beauty. Because healing occurs both internally and externally, most people notice tighter skin, fewer lines and wrinkles, and improved elasticity rather quickly. All of these elements combined lead to a radiant complexion and youthful appearance that vehemently defies mother nature’s aging process.

Getting Verification

Sadly, there are companies in operation today that make claims of producing “organic” products when in fact, they do not qualify as such. Sometimes, the products are actually made with natural ingredients which are different from those of an organic nature but other times, products contain harmful chemicals and synthetics. For years, the term “organic” has been misunderstood so we felt it important to provide a brief description that would make buying organic facial products easier.

Because of this misunderstanding but also misleading companies, consumers should learn the true meaning or organic and know what to look for on product labels. In simple terms, organic means that during the growing of plants, no artificial fertilizers, pesticides, or synthetic chemicals were used. However, there is an even higher level of organic in which all manufacturing, packaging, and transportation processes are void of harmful chemicals.

The challenge is that most people believe organic skin care products are exactly what marketing claims. However, in looking over the list of ingredients, this may or may not be the case, which is why an individual should become educated. A perfect example is that a skincare product might be marketed as being made with organic plant material or herbs but what the manufacturer fails to reveal are the other inorganic ingredients in the formula. This means a consumer believes the product to be organic when in fact, it is not.
